DeviantART is a simple, beautiful idea. A community for sharing your art, your passion, with others.
Therefore, we must make sure everyone feel wanted and appreciated in the community. Mean, stupid comments at otherwise beautiful artpieces are common. For a young aspiring artist, having someone put you down while you're still struggling to find your place in the art, can be a traumatic experience. I say, there is NO artist out there, who deserves just that. Some people think that putting others down will make your art seem better. It won't.
Maybe you'll feel good for a moment, but putting others down never result in lasting happiness. Compassion and kindness is the true way of optaining happiness.
Feedback and critisism is extremely important for an unexperienced artist. Support is equally important. We should do our best to help each other to improve. Therefore I present you a quick guide for giving good critisism:
The Art of Giving Feedback I do not claim this is the only way, but here I'll give you some tips for not hurting the very artist you tried to help.
1) Always start with a compliment
There's always something nice to say about the piece. Starting out by saying "Wow, her hair is beautiful!" or "Great piece" gets the artist more interested in hearing what else you have to say. You open up for communication. Starting out with saying "I hate this" or "Her face is weird" is both insulting and hurting for the artist reading your comment.
2) You're not all-knowing
Saying things the right way helps a lot. Instead of saying "The hair should be softer" say "But, maybe you should consider softening up the hair?" It seems like a small difference but it makes a big difference for the artist reading it. They'll easier accept your comment as a suggestion and not view you as arrogant. Remember, you're trying to help!
3) Explain what you mean
Often, when you rush a comment, the artist will get confused to what you mean. If they don't understand your comment, it'll be easier for them to write you of as just a hater or something similar. Therefore, details, always details.
4) End with an encouraging word
Ending the comment with "I think you're really improving" or "Great work!" is a good method of getting the artist to like you. If they like you, they'll take your advice more seriously.
If we remember to be kind towards others in the community, we can encourage them to do even better! I know that most of you are gorgeous, amazing people that possibly already follow my advices here. But sometimes, you just forget that the artist is a real person, with emotions. Sometimes they're just a name on your screen.
That's why it's really important in an online community to look out for each other.
What do you guys think? Any tips I missed? Do you think feedback and support is as important as I think? I'd love to hear your opinion!
